Rooms
The Harbour Masters House offers a range of rooms from private doubles to mixed dorms and female-only dorms. All rooms come with shared bathrooms, but guests praise the spacious, comfortable rooms and balconies with harbour views. Some rooms have high ceilings, mouldings, and fireplaces.
Leisure
Guests can play billiards in the games room, join walking tours or game drives. There's also a tour desk to help organize outings. The hostel has a shared lounge, outdoor furniture, and a BBQ area for socializing.
Location
The hostel is 3 km from Kings Beach, 5 km from Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, and 5 km from The Boardwalk. It's close to No 7 Castle Hill Museum, Prince Alfred's Guard Memorial, and Settlers Park Nature Reserve. Chief Dawid Stuurman International Airport is 4 km away. Uber to the airport costs under 50R. The area is quiet but some streets feel unsafe after dark; guests recommend using Ubers.
Amenities
The hostel provides free private parking, free WiFi (strong in common areas, weak in rooms), and laundry service. The shared kitchens are functional and clean. Breakfast is available for 50R. The 24-hour front desk can store valuables in a safe. The building is secured with gates and locks.
Staff & Atmosphere
The staff are friendly and helpful, with special mentions for Anastasia, Diego, Sue, and Sam. They guide guests to safe local spots and even accompany them to the supermarket. The building is a beautiful Victorian house with historic features, located next to Fort Frederick and overlooking the harbour.
“It's clear this former harbour master's residence cultivates a genuinely welcoming atmosphere, with staff who go out of their way to make you feel at ease, even arranging free city tours that delve into the authentic pulse of Port Elizabeth. The building itself offers rewarding views, and while the immediate surroundings might not be conventionally polished, the security measures and the historic charm create a worthwhile, well-kept haven, especially considering the affordability and comfortable private rooms.”
